HOW TO USE THE SEARCH ENGINE :

What's the difference between 'all' & 'any' in the search box ?
When you do a search our engine scans all of the websites in our index for references to the words you have asked for - specifying 'all' will narrow down the results because any website found must contain every word you've asked for .... so theoretically should produce the result you wanted. Asking us to search for 'any' will widen the search options and produce more results though not necessarily exactly what you were looking for. As with all search engines the returned results will depend purely on your choice of words you use - avoid unnecessary words to get better results.

Why should I use Search Wales instead of other search engines etc ?
Let's assume you are reading these words from somewhere in Wales - chances are when you use the internet you are looking for websites and information in Wales - WE ONLY SEARCH FOR SITES IN WALES. Major search engines like Yahoo, Google, AltaVista etc are all excellent search engines, but lets be honest, the results they produce on a search can sometimes be frustrating if all you're really looking for is welsh websites. Welsh users of the internet love our site and some of the major search engines are starting to realise the importance of a more localised search facility for users.

Why can't I find what I'm looking for ?
If you've tried all the variations of a search 'all', 'any' etc and still can't find what you wanted then it's possible our index has no references to it - in those instances we can only apologise and say we'll try harder next time. It's difficult to develop a search engine to cover any possible eventuality but we are trying our best to do it. You can always expand your search to use other search engines with the links at the bottom of our results pages - this is done automatically and you don't have to type in your search words again. You can also recommend us to other websites by using our automatic referal system - we appreciate our users spreading the word about Search Wales and your recommendations will ultimately enhance our site and improve your enjoyment of it.

I found some sites outside Wales - why are they listed ?
Whilst we say we only list welsh websites, we also know that many of our users are looking for information that might not necessarily originate in Wales but is of immense benefit to them and we wouldn't wish to exclude them from our index. A very small percentage of our index will include non welsh sites, possibly a national organisation with local branches throughout Wales, or government bodies, etc. - we hope you agree this is a sensible approach.

HOW TO ADD YOUR OWN SITE :

When will my listing appear on Search Wales ?
We try our very best to include you in our index within 2 weeks of you submitting your site. BUT, and it's a BIG BUT - you must have included your link back to us on your website or you won't be included . We don't charge for appearing on our search pages like many search engines now do, but we ask for a link back to us and to avoid being excluded from our site you need to get that link up before submitting your site to us for our robot to verify it. Then we will automatically scan your site and include it in our database. More details are on our Add URL page.

Why does the title say 'blank' or 'untitled' on my listing ?
This is a problem originating from your website not ours - it means that when you built your website you forgot to give it a title in the html coding and is very simple to cure. Check the source code for your page and at the top you will see two 'tags' which say < title > and < /title > ...... the words between those tags are what appears on search engine listings and at the very top of the browser you are using - presumably it says blank or untitled document at the moment, so replace it with a page title e.g. Search GB - do it for your Country - save the page and refresh your browser - now your page has a proper title. You also need to make sure your website is taking full advantage of being listed - it's no good being listed if people can't find you with the relevant keywords - some search engines extract information on your website from 'meta tags' that are inserted between the 'head' tags in your source code.Click Here for a new window to open which contains our 'meta tag generator' which will help you to fine tune your website.

How can I check I've actually been included on Search Wales ?
The quickest method is to actually search for the domain name itself - in the search box type websitename.com (or .co.uk or .net etc .....) and your listing will come up in the results - this is always assuming you have added your site of course. Then try a search using various specific keywords to your website - see the link above in the previous question to get the best out of your site. If you haven't listed yet and want to submit your site Click Here to go to our online submission service.
